REGRETS AND BRUNETTES UPCOMING ALBUM AVAILABLE FOR FULL STREAM

jpg

Los Angeles pop rock outfit Regrets and Brunettes are set to release their new album, At Night You Love Me on December 1. Readers may be familiar with the track 'Tough Love' that currently sits at 15 on this weeks Indie30 chart. If your hankering for more of the album, links to download two more tracks from it appear below courtesy of blog site Parasites and Sycophants and the band have put the whole album with accompanying lyrics up for streaming on their website. At Night You Love Me is a delicious set of classic pop tunes that suggests Regrets And Brunettes are set to break out from the west coast of the US for bigger and better things. One hopes the timing of the release doesn't undermine its potential success as many music journos, mags, sites and blogs are set to put their cues in the rack for the end of the year. This website for one, is more than happy to shout the album's praises from the highest rooftop. Regrets and Brunettes play The Echo with Seasons (see below) and Downtown/Union on Monday 30 November to see the album in.

FEATURE ALBUM: NOT LETTING UP AND WITHOUT GREAT FAULTS

JPG

The self titled debut album from Californian electronic shoegazers Letting Up Despite Great Faults is an undoubted pop gem which ever way you look at it. Beautifully understated, exuding the sounds of a distant New Order, an upbeat Radio Dept. and a restrained M83 all the while combining that with a seemingly effortless fuzzy electro dance feel that is all their own. Mike Lee and co. clearly wear their hearts on their collective sleeves and there is an almost teenage like innocence in the music, a certain wistfulness and self conciousness that is not often found in the electro-pop genre. However, delve into the lyrics, sung with hushed multi layered vocals and bittersweet regret and an element of wishful thinking is revealed.

The first four tracks are killer territory, cracking along at pace. 'In Steps' the opener, which achieved Top 5 status on the Indie30 chart this month is a pulsating number that positively shimmers and cascades over the listener with each layer of synth added. 'Folding Under Stories Told' combines an automaton 4/4 rhythm with a washed out guitar riff sitting under some clever keyboard work.  The fuzzy shoegaze sound makes an entry on the perfectly washed out 'The Colors Aren't You And Me' while 'Our Younger Noise' glides along hosting three simultaneous layers of electronic bliss.

'Pause' as the title suggests, slows the pace down and punters could be forgiven for initially thinking filler. However, it fits perfectly snug after the aforementioned numbers and in an album sense is much needed. 'So Fast: You' continues down that road with blips and beeps overlayed with nursery chimes. 'Photograph Shakes' and 'Sun Drips' float along nicely situating themselves as perfect foils for the final track, the kickass 'Release', an outstanding piece of perfect shoegaze pop full of optimism yet sober reflection as the lazy guitar chords entangle themselves with duelling yet laconic twin synths. Letting Up Despite Great Faults is, at a little over 32 minutes, a short, sharp and very shiny package of bittersweet pop at its tautest and finest.

[INGENTING] TO DROP NEW SINGLE WITH VIDEO FROM TOMHET IDEL TOMHET

jpg

Labrador have announced the release of a new double A sided single from Swedish six piece, [ingenting]. The band's name translates literally to 'nothing' in English and the track featured below 'Dina händer är fulla av blommor' (Your Hands Are Full Of Flowers) marks one half of the follow up to Hallelujah which was released with the album Tomhet Idel Tomhet (Emptiness, Nothing But Emptiness) mid year. As the title of the single and album suggest, [ingenting] have released all their material in Swedish since their inception in 2003, the only band on Labrador's roster to do so. They are assisted on this track by the ethereal vocals of Sibille Attar from fellow Swedes Speedmarket Avenue. Check out the extremely impressive video for it below.  'Dina händer är fulla av blommor' is out as a Double A side with another track from the album 'Ge tillbaka det' on December 9.

CALIFONE TOURS WEST COAST OF U.S. WITH FILM IN TOW

jpg

Chicago based and Indie30 feature album artists Califone are set to tour the west coast of the U.S. in December playing the live soundtrack to their own movie All My Friends Are Funeral Singers. Frontman Tim Rutili directed and wrote the feature, which involves a psychic woman who lives by herself in the woods, in a house full of ghosts. Angela Bettis plays said woman, with a faded sign outside her house proclaiming ‘Psychic Adviser’. People wander in, “So what can I do for you today?” / “You’re the psychic, you tell me”. Califone themselves are in the film amongst a myriad of interesting characters, such as a smoking bride who declares ‘I hung myself with my something in blue’. If the trailer is something to go by it looks like a creepy and artistic film, with some beautiful tracking shots and surreal moments, a heap of framed portraits simultaneously falling off a wall behind a man on a sofa is particularly David Lynch-esque.

Califone have dabbled in playing live soundtracks before, the Declaration series 1 and 2 were released eight years ago. This saw them playing with contemporary film and the 3rd and 4th venture are said to be on the cards for future dates. The official video for the track ‘All My Friends Are Funeral Singers’ (also directed by Rutili) has a nice super-8 quality to it. It uses a spilt screen, featuring the band playing in a room of the house from the film and a hazy out of focus Bettis singing the lyrics while at times chucking tarot cards at the camera. Check it out below.

Tim Rutili obviously knows his stuff. Expertly capturing the beauty of music and film together at this level is a rare thing. The Lars von Trier / Bjork venture, Dancer In The Dark and instrumentally Wim Wender’s Paris Texas are examples. When you can’t imagine the film with any other soundtrack you have it. Califone have captured it here in spades and the result is powerful and majestic.

December 3, Husky Union, Seattle
December 4, Rickshaw Theater, Vancouver
December 5, The Mission Theater, Portland
December 7, Great American Music Hall, San Francisco
December 9, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles

AS THE TEMPERATURE RISES, THE SUN IS SHINING ON BEACH HOUSE

jpg

Despite the chilly notions the title 'Norway' conjures up and the fact the bands back catalogue is largely frosty and sparse with glimmers of warmth and light, the first track to be lifted from the new album, Teen Dream by Baltimore duo Beach House raises the temperature gauge several notches. There is also a noticeable change in Victoria Legrand's vocals, in fact you could be forgiven for thinking that they don't belong to her. More fully rounded, free and less restrained by effects, there is a dryness, almost smoky husk present alongside, musically the same trademark keyboards, warped guitar sound and the ever present drum machine, but now more rhythmically up tempo. The track positively floats past you, tantalises, teases, draws you in and then its gone as fast as it came. Teen Dream, the follow up to last year's Devotion is out on January 25 in the UK and January 26 in the US. Going by this it will be greatly anticipated and a perfect way to kick of the year. Download the track below and view a live performance of the track at the Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri.

FEATURE ALBUM: BARZIN - STAYED TOO LONG OUT OF THIS PLACE

The third album from Canadian Barzin Hosseini, Notes To An Absent Lover, has finally dropped in the U.S. after earlier releases in Canada and Europe. Long term Indie30 readers might have noticed that we picked up on this guy back in April with the release of 'Stayed Too Long In This Place' which was a mainstay of the Top30 for many weeks. 'Soft Summer Girls' followed in July and was another great contender, only recently departing the chart. This album is more musically upbeat than his former releases, with some beautiful string arrangements by Karen Graves amongst banjo, harmonica, vibraphone, steel guitar, piano, bass and percussion. Barzin's amazing voice at times seems hypnotic, meandering its way through lyrics dealing with such themes as broken guitars, mother-in-laws and love lost. This has been called a break up album and while the idea of failed and finished relationships may have been the catalyst for Notes to An Absent Lover, there is much more to it than that.

Barzin nails the emotional centre of how it feels to lose someone special, and does it in a simple and direct way. The opening track 'Nobody Told Me' ... Forgetting could be so hard/So I drove around/The city lights, they made me drunk/But then longing came and took me back/Back to her...features slide guitar at its haunting best and sets the tone for the album beautifully.

'Soft Summer Girls' has been another favourite here at Indie30 and is Barzin at his most delicate. The track seems to float along like a leaf in the breeze, very floaty. 'Stayed Too Long In This Place' is sure to strike a chord from the outset (it did for this writer) with its slide guitar and violin creating a feeling of longing, searching, yearning. The female backing vocals paired with Barzin's are sweet and very subtle.

'The Dream Song' captures the feeling of the half awake/asleep state perfectly, peering straight into the heart with stripped back instrumentation... And I wrote a song/About all the things I need/Will I have a house?/Will I be a star?/What would people think if I didn't make it far?...It begins with Barzin's voice sounding as if it is coming from a radio with a slightly static feel, like you are hearing it from another room. This track is full of the introspection and vulnerability that Barzin does so well.

'Queen Jane' is a tale of loneliness and perhaps writer's block. The harmonica punctuates the melancholy lyrics and adds a feeling of hope amongst the darkness. Upon hearing this you feel that Barzin really needs a hug.

There are so many music categories these days, sub categories and sub sub categories...it goes on and on. Genres can be useful for keeping your iTunes library neat and tidy and Barzin has often been dropped into the box labelled Slowcore. Slow tempo, sparse arrangements, themes of heartbreak... these are characteristics which define this genre and Barzin does have all these bases covered. Whatever you call it, it's a slow-mo, fluid journey that is intimate, romantic and sensual. Barzin's voice, lyrics and the overall atmosphere make this album one to invest some quality time with.

SKIPPING GIRL VINEGAR RELEASE NEW SINGLE - THIRD INSTALMENT OF FOUR

jpg

Melbourne indie acoustic popsters Skipping Girl Vinegar have been going great guns all year in Australia on the back of their debut album, Sift The Noise released late 2008. They have just released the third single from it, 'Sinking' which is accompanied by a animated video clip, the third in a series of four. The single and clip follows up the first  two singles 'One Chance' and the title track. The band has thus far resisted some hefty offers from record labels and released their album through their own label Secret Fox. The videos were created by Leigh Ryan and frontman Mark Lang and the band are currently part way through a residency at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne and the Ravel in Sydney. Catch them at the latter tonight playing two sets from 7.30 while they'll be at the former next Wednesday, 25th November. If you haven't done so already, check out the the clip trilogy (in order) below and click on the link to download the new single (we think for a short time only so get to it).

FEATURE ALBUM: ATLAS SOUNDS OF SUMMER - LOGOS

Atlas Sound's new long player, Logos (on the Kranky label) is a blissed out affair with a definite summer-kinda feeing to it, perfectly timed for those living in the southern half of this world. The second release from Bradford Cox (also in Deerhunter) features beautiful collaborations with Noah Lennox from Animal Collective and Panda Bear, and Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier. The album cover belies the sweet sounds contained within, each track sweeping you away and implanting itself in your head for a good while.

The album opens with 'The Light That Failed', a trippy mix of drippy sounds and squelchy loops easing you gently into 'An Orchid', a track that would not feel out of place being listened to under a palm tree on a deckchair with a cool drink and pair of sunglasses involved. The ultra catchy Lennox-featured 'Walkabout' is pure pop genius...To go away and not look back and think of what others say/To go ahead and change your life without regard of what is said/ And everyone must do the same/ You find yourself lost again...it's a standout track for sure.

'Sheila', despite the chorus of 'we'll die alone together' has a bittersweet feel and a mix of guitar and maracas that will stay with you long after the first listen. A highlight is definitely 'Quick Canal' (featured here on the Top30) with the unmistakable vocal offerings of Sadier suiting the overall vibe of the album flawlessly amongst the electro landscape swirling in the background.

An unfinished version of Logos was leaked on the Internet earlier this year prompting this response from Cox..."I did not react well to the leak, in retrospect, it became the kind of Internet-fuelled drama that I was quickly learning to despise, I had always desired to speak through music, not blog posts and interviews etc, I considered abandoning the project".

It's a good thing for us he didn't abandon it, as Logos offers us a unique experience, with a mix of tracks standing tall on their own while sitting beautifully together.

THE LIVE LIST: WILD BEASTS, JACK PENATE, THE CRIBS

jpg jpg jpg

A new section on indie30, the Live List starts today with three UK acts. Wild Beasts, who gave us one of the standout albums of 2009 back in August recently played two songs on that English music institution Later...with Jools Holland which you can view below. They are joined by The Cribs, who have just released their new album in the U.S and recently also played three tracks on Later... Jack Penate, who released a less hit and miss affair than his debut effort with Everything Is New, brought his band to Seattle recently to play some tracks in the University Of Washingtons' KEXP studios. We've linked to two standouts from that performance.

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB TO RELEASE FIRST SINGLE OFF DEBUT ALBUM

jpg

Ireland's Two Door Cinema Club have quickly followed up their work from earlier this year and recorded their debut album with plans to drop it in February next year. The three piece still minus real life drummer are set to release the first single 'I Can Talk' through Kitsune Records on November 23. It's certainly different to 'Something Good Can Work', soon to feature in this websites' forthcoming Top 100 of 2009 and sounds more like We Are Scientists with old style backing vocals. Check out the clip below and download one of the B side remixes by Crystal Fighters. Incidentally, they are playing the Kitsune Maison Night in Berlin ith Delphic and The Phenomenal Handclap Band on November 27.

NEW SAMBASSADEUR ALBUM DUE OUT FEBRUARY - FIRST TASTE RELEASED

jpg

Swedish four piece orchestral popsters Sambassadeur are set to release a new album next February according to their label Labrador. Given the fact the album is yet to be titled, the February release date might yet be put back. Their last album, Migration, featured the brilliant off sax pop of 'Subtle Changes', one of the best songs of 2007. The first track of the new album 'Days' follows a similar bent (albeit without sax) and is a tasty three minute pop wonder that you can download at the link below.

PATRICK WOLF GETS ALL ROMANTIC AND EMOTIVE ON VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE

jpg

Loving to surprise and confound, the new video for 'Damaris', the latest single from The Bachelor, released earlier this year sees Patrick Wolf serenading and taking a journey with a beautiful high class woman in the English countryside. It's chivalrous, debonair, spiritual and overly theatric, the latter trait Wolf is well known for. Somehow though I think he is sending a message on this one although there is no tongue in the kissing interlude. The woman in case you're wondering is theatre actress Gwendoline Christie, whose background suits the video perfectly. 'Damaris' is out as a single on December 14 while the other half of The Bachelor, The Conqueror will be out sometime in 2010.

MOGWAI BURN UP THE SCREEN WITH TWO MUSIC DOCOS

Mogwai

Rock Action Records are set to release Special Cases, a live album from those sonic blasters of mind melting post rock sounds, Mogwai. The album will accompany a special music doco Burning, by Vincent Moon and Nathanael Le Scouarnec, which will be screening with the short Adelia, I Want To Love at the Copenhagen Documentary Festival this week. The former chronicles their Brooklyn shows in glorious black and white, and for those who haven't experienced the assault on the senses that is a Mogwai gig, this 50 minute spectacle will prove to be the next best thing. Frontman Stuart Braithwaite will be spinning a dj set following the Copenhagen premier.

Adelia, I Want To Love, (co directed by Teresa Eggers) weaves the stories of a ninety year old woman, who has never been to a real concert, with Braithwaite's reflections on the band as he prepares for a festival in Italy. Adelia happens to be the grandmother of the festival organiser and we follow her as she gets ready and travels to the gig. The 25 minute short film features lovingly shot visuals of Italy with the cinematic sounds of Mogwai as your guide. The juxtaposition (don't care for that word at all but seems apt here) of granny making her way through the throngs of post rock punters is sublime. I hope she enjoyed the gig. This short was released on a bonus dvd with a special edition of The Hawke Is Howling. Check out the trailer below.

Media surfaced for a short time this week on a couple of blogs and there was an instant where you could listen to new track 'The Mystery Zone' on The Hype Machine. Just before they release they embark on a mini tour of the US and will be in England in late January. For those dates go here. We'll be scouring the blogs for the first tidbit off the record over the next month so stay tuned.

BISHOP ALLEN RELEASE NEW VIDEO FOR TRUE OR FALSE

Brooklyn's indie popsters Bishop Allen have combined with director Randy Bell, choreographer Andrea Delmonico and a plethora of women in short 60's style dresses to produce a new video for the track True Or False, featuring lead vocals by Darbie Nowatka Rice. The track comes from the album Grrr, released earlier this year. The leggy video kickstarts the bands current North American tour with Throw Me The Statue and Darwin Deez. Check out the video below and for the tour dates go here.

jpg

We then travel to The Netherlands where The Kilimanjaro Jazz Ensemble are doing great things with their eclectic blend of atmospheric post jazz-rock. This track 'Sirocco' comes from their second album Here Be Dragons. Long Beach Shinsters Avi Buffalo have a new single out called 'What's It In For'. When you listen to it you'll know why we've described them as such. We then come to the Big Apple where Brooklyn's blog darlings Freelance Whales feature with 'Hannah' along with singer-songwritersTim Williams 'I Want To Die In California' (new album Careful Love) and Miles Benson Anthony Robinson 'The Sound' (new album Summer Of Fear) as well as the art rock of Dragon Turtles 'Island Of Broken Glass' (forthcoming album Almanac) and the more straight ahead pop rock of Heads Up Display (new EP As/Is). FEATURE ALBUM: EMBRYONIC, THE FLAMING LIPS REBORN

The name of the album is more than telling. Embryonic is nothing short of a rebirth for one of indie music's most groundbreaking and important bands. The old saying goes that bands have a window of opportunity that lasts perhaps an album or two where they will produce their pièce de résistance and then fade slowly away as the magic disappears. The Flaming Lips however, are a band that confounds this theory. Granted, they're not the only one as there are many bands that have consistently produced quality material over their life span, but the Lips ability to regenerate just when you think they've run out of gas is legendary. Embryonic has been called the consummation of two and a half decades and while this is certainly the case, a number of close listens reveal even more than a celebration of the best that definitive collection has to offer, especially lyrically and with their adept, yet space inducing use of studio effects.

There is almost a fatalistic freedom to this record that is borne out by Wayne Coyne readily admitting that the approach on this album was about throwing caution to the wind and diving into a creative process that would have no boundaries. The gloves were off. The planned frivolity, calculated shock value and hit and miss pressure of the past few years have disappeared and been replaced by a combination of musical maturity and a wisdom that senses when the time has come to throw off the shackles and boldly experiment come what may. The only shocking thing about this 70 minute oddly shaped epic is that Warner actually backed it. I guess thats what you get for the cred built up over so many years. But it is rare to find such an unshamed foray into sonic adventure that is as effecting and lasting on a major in this day and age.

Underpinned by a raw mixture of Micheal Ivins's hypnotically thrilling bass lines and runs and Kliph Scurlock's mesmerising yet almost shambolically sounding bout of percussive brilliance, Embryonic builds upon this strong foundation with an amazing array of studio wizardry and spartan guitar sponsored by Coyne and multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd. Despite that studio work, this is about as live and immediate as the Lips have ever sounded on record as a band in a long time. Highlights include the jarringly powerful ode to environmental holocaust 'See The Leaves' which sees Coyne's detached vocals meld perfectly alongside Ivins's massive bass chords and Scurlock's busy percussion. The slow burn of the warped arpeggio studio strings blended with synth undertones (Drozd's work?) amid Coyne's lament is probably the most memorable passage in any song this year. 'The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine' rivals anything off its similar sounding Yoshimi, 'Silver Trembling Hands', the interestingly placed (at 16 on the album) and current No. 2 on Indie30 is a driving psychedelic wonder and will feature prominently in end of year song lists while 'Worm Mountain' is a throbbing, fuzzed out freak show that threatens to engulf yet break apart at the same time. 'Watching The Planets' is a perfect shout out end to a near perfect record and the album's hypnotic centrepiece, 'Powerless' is anything but musically with its incessant bassline and muddled and chaotic guitar work. Having highlighted the tracks that serve as the albums base it would be remiss not to mention the less immediate gems that are the free form of 'Aquarius Sabotage' (love the name), the playfulness of 'I Can Be A Frog', the machinations of 'Sagittarius Silver Announcement' and the twin wonders of 'Scorpio Sword' and 'The Impulse'.

There is hardly a wasted moment on Embryonic and it would be a hard task to find a double album of such length that could boast such a statement. It is a record that will see many long time Flaming Lips fans breathe a collective sigh of relief and look forward to hearing what further musical journeys await them. There is enough new and vital ideas here to indicate that the band seem intent on being around into a fourth decade. This is one fan that certainly hopes that is the case.

DO MAKE SAY THINK BACK WITH NEW ALBUM - TRACK LISTING EASY TO REMEMBER

jpg

Last month saw the release of a new record, Other Truths from Canadian post rock outfit Do Make Say Think. Now into their fourteenth year, this is the fifth full length from the Torontonian luminaries who have made a name for themselves playing thought provoking instrumental rock music that focuses on proto-jazz stylings (especially in their earlier years), melodic shifting guitar and heavily driven bass lines. This record contains four tracks, the imaginatively named and easily remembered 'Do', 'Make', 'Say' and 'Think'.  With 'Do' hitting the Top 30 yesterday at 14, we have a link to a stream of the closer 'Think', a slow burning track containing the usual number of twists and turns you'd expect from a group that seeks to challenge and confound. The album is out now through Constellation Records.

SO LAKE WANT TO BUILD A ROOF...? WE'RE GLAD THEY MADE ANOTHER ALBUM!

jpg

Hailing from Olympia, Washington State, north western US indie pop band Lake released their new album earlier this month, Lets Build A Roof, on the community label K Records just a year after Oh The Places We Will Go. With 'Don't Give Up' a current staple on the Indie30 chart, the album gives us all a chance to sample further their lo-fiesque natural pop music. There is definitely something earthy and downright honest about Lake as they adeptly combine a heck of a lot of instrumental activity into their music without confining space, no mean feat. In fact is is this unusual feature that sets them apart from others. Check out a couple more tracks from the album below. Lake cut their way down the east coast of the US over the next week or so before heading to the opposite side of the country for more dates through November. For dates go here.

WHAT WE ALL COME TO NEED AND EVERYONE NEEDS A DOSE OF PELICAN

jpg

Hot on the heels of fellow intense post rock instrumentalists Russian Circles releasing their new record, Chicago now Los Angeles based quartet Pelican drop their fourth album, What We All Come To Need this week, their first for Southern Lord Records. Continuing to eschew their own style and still refusing to conform or be pigeon holed to a style, the album, already getting some glowing reviews features a number of guest appearances including new label mate Greg Anderson of Sunn O))), former label Hydra Head's owner and Isis frontman Aaron Turner and Allen Epley of Shiner and The Life And Times fame. It is Epley's vocals, (yes, vocals on a Pelican song) that appear on the track and album closer 'Final Breath' which you can download from the link below. As an added treat Empty's Tapes ventured to a Pelican show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis a couple of Sunday's back and recorded the show. You can link to it below through our track pick 'The Creeper'.
