IT'S FOUR CHICKS DOING MURDER BALLADS - THE BAD SEEDS NEVER LOOKED THIS GOOD!

This clip below features Norweigian indie pop band Katzenjammer, although a search for the name on wikipedia turns up this weird high brow British comedy duo who have been compared to Victor Borge. I can feel a lawsuit coming on! Playing an eclectic blend of instruments including accordion, mandolin, balaika???, xylophone, kazoo and banjo along with the staple bass, guitar and drums, the girls describe themselves on their website as the equivalent to 'society's hangover' and label themselves 'saints of scarred souls'. Having hangover's quite often, this writer can tell you that they have never looked quite this good. Katzenjammer actually translates to 'cats wail' in German, the irony won't be lost on you when you listen to their sweet voices. Unfortunately, their album 'Le Pop', released in Norway last year has not been released anywhere else although you can order it from their website. However, I'm sure a label will pick them up soon. Look out for it and enjoy.

EAST HUNDRED TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM 'PASSENGER'

East Hundred Promo Picture

Who the hell is East Hundred you well might ask? Well, that's what Indie30 was asking itself just yesterday when this band popped up from nowhere during another search ferretting through the blogs and music websites from across the globe - apparently bloggers have been banging on about them for two years. If the Philadephia five piece's new single and other tracks streaming from their website are anything to go by, if you love driving, swirling and hook driven indie rock you won't be asking who for long! Check out the video for the single below and click on the link to download it to your music library.

FLEET FOXES DRUMMER RELEASES NEW SOLO ALBUM

J Tillman image

So you thought drummers couldn't write music. Well that myth has been dispelled as multi-instrumentalist J. Tillman from Fleet Foxes has just released Vacilando Territory Blues on the American label Western Vinyl. If the track 'Steel On Steel' is representative of how good the rest of the album is, it will be worth a purchase - pitchfork.com think so - read the review here

Franz Nicolay has a long and impressive resume besides being keyboardist for The Hold Steady (at laneway in less than three weeks!!!). Besides his solo stuff he has had connections with The Dresden Dolls, Guingol and other less known bands Mischief Brew, Leftover Crack and Nanuchka as well as setting up the New York based Anti-Social Group. Check out some solo tracks from his newly released album Major General and an older tune with Amanda Palmer's (that's not her in the picture) Dresden Dolls.

TOP 30 ALBUMS OF 2008 ANNOUNCED

This websites 'Top 30 albums of 2008' have finally been announced (see adjacent Feature Albums section). Cut Copy fully deserve their Number one spot but it was close call between 'In Ghost Colours' (the best retro dance/pop/rock release for a long while) and the southern USA country rock band The Drive-By Truckers marathon 19 song effort, 'Brighter Than Creation's Dark'. It just amazes this writer that The Presets scooped the Australian Record Industry's Awards for best Dance everything in 2008 while Cut Copy, who by far achieved the best reviews and recognition in the US (fourth on Pitchfork's list) and Europe went home empty handed. The further irony is The Presets first album 'Beams', a far better effort than 'Apocalypso' went unnoticed back in 2004 (as did Cut Copy's effort 'Bright Light Neon Love'). The just toured Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds came in third with their best album for years 'Dig Lazarus Dig!!!

NEW MUSIC ALREADY MAKING AN IMPACT IN 2009

We are only two weeks into the new year and already there are some exciting releases on the horizon. The early taster from Canadian indie new wave pop band Metric 'Help I'm Alive' suggests the album will be impressive when released. What's been heard of the new Morrissey album is promising with the track 'I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris' getting a few plays around here. Bon Iver releases the Blood Bank EP stateside next week with the title track sure to feature in the first Top 30 chart of the year in a months time. The debut album by Los Angeles guitar pop outfit Army Navy looks to be a jawdropper if the tracks featured on their myspace website are anything to go by. Expect a cover of Maxine Nightingale's 1975 single "Right Back Where We Started From" to feature as well as the solid and catchy original 'My Thin Sides'. Finally, the new A.C. Newman album, 'Get Guilty' is also released in the US next week. Given its been six years since the magnificent pop tome 'The Slow Wonder', the anticipation for this is high. You can check out the promo video for 'Like A Hitman, Like A Dancer by accessing the following link to pitchfork tv. Sounds good.

ANYONE FOR LANEWAY?

Rumours have it that tickets to this years St Jeromes Laneway Festival in Adelaide are not selling that well and that people have been saying the line-up is not as good as last years. This website would like to encourage its readers if they live in Adelaide or any of the other four Aussie venues to support this festival. To see bands the likes of Stereolab play stuff from their new Chemical Chords album and The Hold Steady do the same with Stay Positive as well as No Age (Nouns) and Port O'Brien (All We Could Do Was Sing) together with electronic artists Four Tet and Spain's El Guincho (Palmitos Park!!!) on the one bill not to mention Girl Talk to do what The Presets did last year with Feed The Animals will be awesome. There are some good Australian acts as well - The Drones and The Temper Trap among them. Get tickets at the link below.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE'S MERRIWEATHER POST PAVILLION THIS WEEKS FEATURE ALBUM

Animal Collective have kicked off 2009 with an awesome release - better than 2007's Strawberry Jam. Due on the 20th of January in Australia but out already on vinyl in the US, tracks from the album are due to figure heavily in the Top 30 when it starts again in the middle of February. Pitchfork writer Mark Richardson has already given it a 9.6 - praise indeed. Check out the review below.

HAWKSLEY WORKMAN IS HERE

Canadian singer/songwriter Hawksley Workman brings his unique brand of indie pop/rock to Adelaide tonight. Having released two quite diverse albums during 2008, Between The Beautifuls (which featured the track No Stillness And No Rain which came in at Number 84 in this websites Top songs of 2008) and Los Manlicious, diversity should be the name of the game tonight. Tickets by all reports are still on sale despite the fact it really should be sold out - oh Adelaide! Click below if you're interested in seeing something special.

VIDEO/AUDIO ADDED TO THE TOP 100 SONGS OF 2008 SECTION

For your listening pleasure and to satisfy any curiosities you may have of artists you've just heard of, beneath each entry in the Top 100 you can find either video or audio versions taken and embedded from You Tube.

Some feature the official video of the track while others are reasonable to good live versions or fan videos where appropriate. Some feature just audio only with or without an accompanying picture. The aim is to bring you the best audio available of these songs on the net.

There are a handful of songs that are not accompanied by either video or audio as the tracks are not available on You Tube as yet. It is hoped to try and at least add the audio in some form in the future. Enjoy!
