They don't call it Australia's Festival State for nothing. The capital of South Australia has just enjoyed four of the best acts the independent music world has to offer at the biennal Adelaide Festival of Arts and its annual Fringe accompaniment. The usually more high brow festival boasted awesome shows at its outdoor Barrio complex behind the State Parliament from two artists that have taken out the last two Indie30 albums of the year in 2010 and 2011 respectively, off kilter pop genius Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti (Before Today) and the talented and vital singer/songwriter, Annie Clark aka St. Vincent (Strange Mercy). Tellingly, Pink offered up a number of new tracks which should see the light of day recording wise some time this year. Clark's raucously sublime guitar owning performance was preceded last Friday night by a hypnotising feast of motorik driven electronic rock from three early German pioneers of the genre, guitarist/keyboardist Michael Rother (Neu!/Harmonia), producer Dieter Moebius (Cluster/Harmonia) and percussionist Hans Lampe (La Dusseldorf).

Over at the Fringe, a poignantly stunning performance by folk rock troubador Will Oldham, aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy and friends was given in the Spielgeltent at the Garden of Unearthly Delights in the city's East End. Check out the pictures of all four shows below courtesy of amateur photographer and music tragic, the ever-present and generous Colin Howcroft.
