IN PICTURES: MARIE DAVIDSON & BOAN @ THE KNOCKOUT, SAN FRANCISCO

Pinch yourself type coincidences don't come along very often. A few weeks back Indie30 was sent through Montreal's electronic experimentalist of the dark arts Marie Davidson's amazing new record Un Autre Voyage, which this week has pride of place as our AOTW. Then a few weeks later, I heard news of Austin dark wave duo BOAN's forthcoming debut long player, Mentiras (to be released in June), and as you can see from the pride of place the title track has at number three in our Top 30 at present, I fell instantly for that too.

I'm currently away from my Australian base in Adelaide for six months and my trip through North America and Europe began on Wednesday, the 15th of April in the amazingly loveable and crazy San Francisco. I further scrolled down the BOAN promo a few days before I left the country and to my amazement both Marie Davidson and BOAN were touring the west coast of the US and Canada on their Spring Tour and were to be in that very city on that first night of my sonic and travel adventures. They have often been on tour together but for me, being from Australia, this was unbelievable. I obviously then high tailed it down to The Knockout within hours of getting off the plane to catch the Holodeck Records signees and was treated to an incredible evening of nocturnal electronic art at its finest.

Marie Davidson took to the stage first and took the small but appreciative crowd through her new record in her inimitable idiosyncratic style exhibiting as she always does deep passion for her craft. Her dexterity and expertise on her electronic ensemble of analog gadgetry was exemplary. Her vocal voyage through her French and English lyrics was something to behold, even if I can only speak a few words of incredibly bad French. The engagement with her audience was minimal but, at the end of the day, unnecessary anyway.

And the linguistic twists and hypnotic aural melodies continued with Austin duo BOAN whose vocals are sung partly in Spanish. Both artists are of Spanish speaking heritage and have been working together for many years in various guises - and the BOAN incarnation has been together since 2012, previously being two thirds of Medio Mutantes. Jose Cota departs somewhat from his work in his more hard arse, deconstructive Ssleeperhold project and his softening of style and playfulness with melody while still maintaining raw power was a mesmerising experience indicative of his ongoing willingness to use his considerable electronic hardware to mix, explore and experiment with different methods and he clearly relished his work. Mariana Saldano's magnetic and charismatic vocal and stage performance, a mixture of exhibitionism but also of nuanced reservation was pivotal to the experience. She perfectly understands that while she is there to 'entertain', the interaction between herself and the audience is a two way street. Both her and Cota played off each other perfectly.

Check out some of my pics of the gig below. As always, what Indie30 is, is a DIY, not for profit blog done for pure love so they're not of top quality - simply from my phone but I've done my best to capture my experience and bring it to you. Thank you Marie, Jose, Mariana and Jon for traversing thousands of miles on this tour to gift us your art, intensely grateful.

You can order and pre-order Marie Davidson's and BOAN's new albums respectively here.

TOP 30: TAME IMPALA HIT NUMBER ONE WHILE US GIRLS, YUMI ZOUMA (YES AGAIN!), LIZA ANNE, WE FLOAT, MARCIO LAMA AND VIOLENTS MAKE THE CHART
Thursday, 23 April 2015 00:00

It's been a busy week here at Indie30 with six brand new entries into the Top 30 chart. They are led at 16 by US Girls with the full of attitude 'Damn That Valley', the project of Meg Remy who has just signed to 4AD. Our perennial favourite New Zealanders Yumi Zouma do a straight swap between 'Song For Zoe & Glen' and former number one 'Catastrophe'. That enters at 19. Nashville singer-songwriter Liza Anne is set to release her new album, Two, on May 19th to follow up her debut of last year, The Colder Months'. The new single from it is the super infectious 'Take It Back' and that's at 22.

We featured Swedish/Norweigan outfit We Float last week and 'Mysteceti' debuts at 23 while the Marcio Lama and Binks track, 'Melrose', which we featured on Monday hits the chart at 25.

The final new entry comes from the electronic musical project of Jeremy Larsen who is set to release his new EP, Absentee next month. Larsen colloborates with a roving collection of singers and this uber smooth number sports the vocals of Stacy King. It debuts at 26.

Check out all our previously unfeatured new entries below including the brand new videos for US Girls and Liza Anne as well as for Seoul's gorgeous track, 'The Line'.

GRRL PAL RELEASE RADAR, NEW EP OUT NOW
Tuesday, 21 April 2015 00:00

Perth electronic duo GRRL PAL have just released the kind of Grimes inspired track 'Radar' to coincide with the release of their new EP, Paradise. However, to say its simply an aping of that vibe would be a very lazy thought to convey indeed. And it's basically down to Jay Le Kat's unique and knowing vocal arrangements as well as Danny K's strange little effects that take things in unique directions.

The EP is a multi-generic ride in an electronic sense, it features all the tracks that they have slow dripped over the past year or so. 'Dare' is a sugary pop inspired opener followed by the more contemplative title track, 'Paradise'. 'Night' is a restless beast while the almost rock inspired title track 'Amazon'' follows thereafter. Readers of this blog know how much we are in love with our current Top 10 track, 'Seeing Anything' while 'Set Free' is a dreamy closer that will remind of what's to come from the talented duo.

Paradise is an perfectly understated debut in every sense of the word that only suggests an upward trajectory. Sometimes geographical isolation works for ya! All tracks are available as free downloads at their soundcloud link here. We will update as soon as we get word of how you can be monetarily generous and give it a purchase.

MARCIO LAMA AND BINKS TEAM UP AGAIN FOR NEW SINGLE
Monday, 20 April 2015 21:27

While Monday is arguably the worst day of the week for a zillion reasons, we thought we'd do our best to bring some cheer to your ear by, like a lot of blogs, gifting you the new track, 'Melrose' by diverse Dominican Republic deep house producer Marcio Lama, another collaboration with the gorgeous vocals of Binks, who we cannot find any information about at all - still. We've heard of her for a couple of years but still nothing.... Who is she? It can be downloaded free below. Enjoy.

THE INTELLECTUAL SHADES OF BREAKFAST
Friday, 17 April 2015 22:01

Los Angeles quartet BREAKFAST have to be one of the most intriguing and fiercely independent electro-pop outfits going around right now. The saccharine like sweetness on the surface is perfectly neutralised by the acute sense of unsettling reality lurking underneath that's evident both musically and lyrically. Nothing is ever a permanent beer and skittles situation and through all their three singles this year they not only know it, they live it through their art. So fuckin' smart and so fuckin' now. They'll take on everything and everyone. Check the swinging yet unsettling new single and dig at the US nail care giant 'Sally Hansen' below. Meanwhile their previous single 'Boris' still sits pretty in our Top 30.

TOP 30: BOAN BEAT OUT CHROMATICS, LOWER DENS & COEDS TO HIT TOP TEN ON DEBUT
Thursday, 16 April 2015 00:00

Austin based dark wave electronic outfit BOAN have made quite an impression around here in the last few days. Since the announcement of their debut album, Mentiras, set for a June release through Holodeck Records, the electrifying swoon of the title track has been on incessant repeat since it hit my ear canals. Seeing them live in San Francisco with Marie Davidson last night, where they expertly pulled off the "difficult to do" track live, reinforced just how good it is and they are. It debuts at 8. Read more about BOAN in our previous post from last Sunday.

Portland's Chromatics continue the slow build toward the release of their third album Dear Tommy with the gorgeously enveloping stomper, 'In Films'. That's in at 14.

Our Album Of The Week this week comes from Jana Hunter's Lower Dens project. Escape From Evil is a stunning slow builder of a pop record. On first impressions, its a little innocuous and it took us a while here to appreciate its true strengths. After all, we should have known better really. Superficiality and Hunter have always been sworn enemies and the record's understated timelessness will make a deep impression for a long while to come, for there are no weak tracks at all. 'Ondine' is the second single from it and enters at 18. Stream it below.

The final new entry comes from Coeds with 'Sensitive Boys' who we featured last Saturday. That sneaks in at 30.

Big moves this week stemmed from The Japanese House, 'Pools To Bathe In' (12 to 4) and GRRL PAL, 'Seeing Anything' (15 to 9) while Finn Jaakko Eino Kalevi remains at Number 1 with the beautiful and sublime 'Double Talk'.

The Top Ten list can be found to your right, the entire 30 tracks can be found in all their glorious detail here and our Top 30 player is to the top right streaming each and every track from newest to oldest entry. The great tunes continue folks!

Tuesday, 14 April 2015 00:00

'In Films' is the third track to surface from the forthcoming Chromatics album Dear Tommy. Still no date for that yet that but Johnny Jewel's slow drip release methodology is enough to tide us over, especially when it's this good and it's free.
