Thursday, 09 April 2015 06:48

Just the two new entries this week and it's Torres at 22 with the 'Sprinter', the title track from her debut album out on May and Eternal Summers at 27 with the first single, 'Together Or Alone' from their forthcoming album Gold and Stone. Big moves from The Japanese House, Communions and YAST while IDYLL bounces back from its fall last week. Cuushe moves into the Top 10 while Jaakko Eino Kalevi remains at 1.

WAXAHATCHEE NEW RECORD OUT THIS WEEK
Tuesday, 07 April 2015 00:00

Philadephia based singer/songwriter Katie Crutchfield releases her third record as Waxahatchee this week, the ethereal, yet earthy and unpretentiously diverse, Ivy Tripp. It's the first long player from the fiercely independent DIY artist since 2013's Cerulean Salt. Two tracks have surfaced from the album over the past three months, the Top 30 listed, 'Air' and the brief, but telling 'Under A Rock' below.

Ivy Tripp materialised in a small rented room in Holbrook, Long Island with producer, bandmate and one time partner Keith Spencer and is essentially her restlessly melancholic  take on the complete disconnect between the mainstream conventional and the independent DIY worlds. And there's a sadness inherent in that take, a lament of sorts for, in her view, a mutual lack of understanding of expectations and assumptions.

The album is out this week on Merge in North America and Wichita elsewhere. Waxahatchee take the road for a three month long tour of North America, Europe and they'll even be making it to Australia for two shows in July. We'll catch them in Portland in May.

TORRES SPRINTS TOWARDS DEBUT ALBUM
Monday, 06 April 2015 00:00

Mackenzie Scott, the American singer-songwriter who goes by the band name Torres will release her ultra-impressive debut album, Sprinter next month and last week put out its equally impressive title track. The Georgia born artist penned the album in the middle of 2014 and then assembled an coterie of highly respected people to assist her in bringing it to fruition, among them backing band members Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Ian Oliver (PJ Harvey) as well as veteran producer/musician Rob Ellis. The PJ Harvey connection may lead some to quick conclusions. Simple word? Don't.

Scott has said of the intimate and deeply personal album that while she was always going to put her own perspectives of her own story front and centre of the writing process, she chose characters to filter them through, avoiding the pitfalls associated with literal writing. Musically, it is unashamed in its rock sensibilities. Listen to 'Sprinter' below as well as another track from the record, 'Strange Hellos'. Sprinter is out May 5 in the US and May 18 in UK/Europe/R.O.W. through Partisan. Pre-order here.

ETERNAL SUMMERS RETURN WITH GOLD AND STONE
Sunday, 05 April 2015 00:00

Roanoke trio Eternal Summers won an album of the week gong from us back in 2012 for the sublime rock that was their second album Correct Behaviour. For some reason last year's The Drop Beneath didn't have the same effect here as perhaps it sounded too similar. However, the first single, 'Together Or Alone' from their new record Gold And Stone, out in June, has regained our attention. Nicole Yun's guitar alternates between a hook filled riff and powerful and hypnotic chord work while Jonathan Woods bass work winds about providing a strong backdrop. Gold And Stone is out on June 2.

TOP 30: JAAKKO TO ONE WHILE CUUSHE, THE JAPANESE HOUSE, GRRL PAL, YAST, COMMUNIONS & SOFI DE LA TORRE DEBUT
Thursday, 02 April 2015 05:22

This week sees the debut of another six new entries and a new number one. Leading the new entries at 13 is a track we featured last week. It's Japanese electronic artist Cuushe with the mutli-layered and upbeat 'Dare'.

We never thought we'd be featuring anything to do with the 1975 on Indie30 but the latest track by The Japanese House has changed all that. The alter-ego of London based artist Amber Bain has just released her debut EP, 'Pools To Bathe In' produced by Matt Healy and George Daniel. The former adds a considerable vocal effort to the delicate and pastoral like title track. That's at 21.

Perth's GRRL PAL sit one position behind at 22 with the previously featured 'Seeing Anything' while Communions, who we wrote about yesterday are in at 24 with 'Out Of My World'. Malmo's Yast are in at 25 with 'When You're Around' and the new entries are complete the with entrance of the fiercely independent Spanish singer-songwriter Sofi de la Torres. Her new single, 'Lovers Work Late' is a piece of pop gold and it debuts at 26.

Finnish artist Jaakko Eino Kalevi has taken over the number one spot this week with a bullet, rising from his debut of six last week. Courtney Barnett enters the top 10 at 8 with 'Depreston' while Evvol does likewise at 9 with 'No Love'

The two new tracks we haven't featured can be streamed below. All chart details here while all tracks are streaming in the player.

YUMI ZOUMA COMPLETES TWO PART VIDEO
Tuesday, 31 March 2015 00:00

New Zealand trio Yumi Zouma, fresh from a nightmarish SXSW where they had all their gear stolen and had to play an abbreviated set as a result, have released part two of their BANGS directed video series for 'Catastrophe' and 'Alena'. The latter featured in the top half of our Top 100 tracks last year. It sees a collection of men heartwarmingly baring their emotions to each other in cathartic fashion. The video release finally gives us an excuse to post the other three tracks from their excellent sold out second EP, II. , 'Song For Zoe & Glen', 'Second Wave' and 'Dodi'

PRINZE GEORGE ON THE UPSWING
Sunday, 29 March 2015 00:00

Synth pop trio Prinze George have just released a new video on the back of their SXSW escapades for their new single, the effusive, yet measured, 'Upswing' which featured on their debut EP released earlier in the month. Listen to that here. The band have reportedly a stack of new material written and a debut album in the works for later in the year. They also play Rough Trade NYC on May 15.

SEEING ANYTHING WITH GRRL PAL
Saturday, 28 March 2015 00:00

Perth "Girl-Boy" duo GRRL PAL have just released the latest track, the minimal, noir like 'Seeing Anything' from their forthcoming self titled EP due out next month. It's a departure of sorts in that it gives nods to space that can be hard to find on their previous tracks. Danny K and Jay Le Kat began their music story back in 2013 releasing their debut single 'Amazon' which was soon noticed by national broadcaster Triple J. They've since slow-released a number of other tracks, two of which were from a stay in the US recording with rapper/producer Parker Ighile. All will appear on said EP and you can listen to them all here. We must admit, yesterday was the first we'd heard of them until they got in touch and we're glad they did. GRRL PAL is now firmly on the agenda and better still, they intend to release a song a month all through 2015. Let's hope that's not a Johnny Jewel type promise... 'Seeing Anything' is below.
